One of the Niyamas is Saucha, that translates to Cleanliness. I like to practice Saucha to my mat before and after my practice. I really enjoy the scent of rosemary when I am in a Childs Pose.
The following little Yoga Mat cleaner recipe is one that I have created having read various articles online.
I start with Witch Hazel which I believe is a North American product, as I don’t recall seeing it in England.
I add an equal amount of water, and a few drops of my favourite essential oil. I have seen written to use Distilled Water, but I take it from my tap. Good ol’ Canadian Water!
Here is the recipe:
Ingredients:
- Equal parts water and alcohol free witch-hazel
- Few drops of essential oils

Measure into a measuring jug the witch hazel and water (I use 1/2 cup each, to create 1 cup), mix by stiring and then add a few drops of essential oils (3 or 4 when making a cup).
Pour into a spray bottle and voila!
Spray onto your mat. I use a reusable cloth to wipe it clean, that remains in my yoga bag.
I did get the Witch Hazel on Amazon; I probably have enough Witch Hazel from this one delivery to make 5 to 6 bottles of Yoga Mat cleaner, which not only saves me some money but also cuts down on some Carbon Emmissions.
